This was an intensive, participatory, field-focused training workshop in life-of-project environmental compliance and environmentally sound design and management (ESDM). The workshop dealt with introductory material in an accelerated manner, focusing on more advanced topics in impact assessment and emerging and complex environmental compliance issues.
This workshop built upon the previous ones in this series (most recently, the February 2014 workshop in Toubacouta, Senegal). It included a strong field component, multiple opportunities for small-group collaboration, and alternating classroom learning with practical exercises.
USAID’s mandatory environmental procedures (22 CFR 216 and associated directives) are USAID’s principal mechanism to ensure ESDM of development activities—and thus to prevent our activities from having significant, unforeseen, avoidable or mitigatable adverse impacts on critical environmental resources, ecosystems, human health and livelihoods. They strengthen development outcomes and help safeguard the good name and reputation of the Agency.
This workshop was a part of a global series of regional training workshops delivered by the Global Environmental Management Support Project (GEMS) in collaboration with, and at the request of, USAID’s regional bureaus and host missions.
